Anti Wrinkle Treatment

What is Botulinum Toxin?

Botulinum toxin is a potent neurotoxin that originates from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. Of the several types, type A is the most commonly used in aesthetic medicine and is the active ingredient in Botox”.

Botulinum toxin has been widely used in clinical medicine since the 1970s to treat conditions such as muscle disorders and facial asymmetry. Cosmetic use followed in the 1980s, when it became popular for its wrinkle-smoothing effects. It is FDA approved for a variety of aesthetic and medical purposes.

What Does it Treat?

Botulinum toxin is primarily used as an anti-wrinkle treatment. Common areas of focus include:

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Vertical frown lines between the brows (11’s lines)
  • Wrinkles around the eyes (Crow’s feet)
  • Prominent vertical neck bands

It is also highly effective in managing excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). While it can be used for other aesthetic goals such as brow shaping or smile adjustment, these applications are more nuanced due to the complexity of facial muscles, and results may vary.

How Does It Work And Is It Safe?

Botulinum toxin works by binding to nerve endings and interrupting the signals that cause muscle contraction. Since wrinkles form due to repetitive muscle movements that crease the skin, reducing muscle activity helps soften and prevent these lines. Over time, as the treated muscles remain more relaxed, the skin above them appears smoother and less lined.

The product is carefully prepared to be very safe for aesthetic use. There is strong clinical evidence supporting its efficacy and safety for treating lines on the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes. It is typically administered using a fine-tipped device to deliver the product precisely into specific facial muscles. Results begin to appear within two weeks.

As with any medical treatment, there are potential side effects. Serious complications are rare, but the most notable is the temporary weakening of an unintended muscle. Minor side effects may include slight bruising at the application sites. At Cosmoderma, all procedures are performed by fully trained professionals to ensure the highest standard of care.
